Enter length, width, and height, pick hydroxyl or ozone, and this calculator returns how many units the room volume calls for. Reach for it when you're scoping deodorization and need a defensible unit count and run — sized to the cubic footage of the room rather than a flat one-machine assumption that won't hold on a large or open space.
Volume is length × width × height in cubic feet. Units are that volume divided by the coverage rating per machine, rounded up so the space is fully covered. Coverage defaults to 1,000 CF per hydroxyl generator and 2,000 CF per ozone unit — common field figures — and you can override with the manufacturer's published rating for the specific machine you're running. Hydroxyl treats occupied space; ozone requires an unoccupied, sealed area and is oxidizing, so follow the generator's output ratings and safety guidance. This volume-and-coverage method is how deodorization equipment is sized across smoke-restoration work.

Hydroxyl generators are safe to run in occupied space and are the default when people or pets remain, but they cover less volume per unit and take longer. Ozone is faster and covers more per machine, but it's an oxidizer that requires a fully unoccupied, sealed space and airing-out afterward. Scope hydroxyl for occupied structures and ozone only for vacant ones. This calculator sizes either method by volume; switch the method toggle and the coverage per unit adjusts accordingly.
Take the room volume — length × width × height — and divide by the machine's coverage rating, then round up. At the 1,000 CF default, a 12 × 15 room with 8 ft ceilings is 1,440 CF, which calls for two hydroxyl units. Larger open areas and higher ceilings push the count up quickly. Always enter the actual rating for the unit you're deploying; a higher-output generator may cover the same space with fewer units.
The 1,000 CF hydroxyl and 2,000 CF ozone defaults are typical planning figures, not a spec for any one machine. Output varies widely by unit and by how heavy the odor load is. Use the coverage override field to enter the manufacturer's published CF rating for the exact generator you're running, and the unit count recalculates. When the file has to justify the equipment line, citing the machine's own rating is far stronger than a generic default.
No. Ozone is a respiratory irritant and oxidizer that must run in an unoccupied, sealed space, with the area aired out before anyone re-enters. Never scope ozone for an occupied structure. When occupants or contents remain, use hydroxyl, which is designed to run safely in occupied space. This tool carries that warning because getting the method wrong is a safety issue, not just a pricing one — follow the generator manufacturer's guidance on run time and clearance.
