Turn a roof's square count into an ordered bundle count with waste built in. Enter your squares and a waste percentage; the calculator adds the allowance and converts to shingle bundles at three per square, rounded up to whole bundles. Reach for it once you know the squares and need a defensible material quantity for the estimate — so the shingle line item reflects what actually gets delivered to the roof, cuts and starter included, not just the bare coverage number.
Start from a square count, add a waste allowance, then convert to bundles. Architectural shingles cover at three bundles per square, so the calculator takes your squares, multiplies by (1 + waste ÷ 100), multiplies by three, and rounds up to the next whole bundle — you can't order a partial bundle. At 20 squares with 12% waste, that's 20 × 1.12 × 3 ≈ 67.2, rounded to 68 bundles. The 12% default covers cuts at hips and valleys plus starter and ridge; verify coverage against the manufacturer's spec, since some designer and impact-rated shingles run four or five bundles per square.

Three bundles per square is standard for architectural and most three-tab shingles, and it's the assumption this calculator uses. Heavier designer or impact-rated shingles can require four or five bundles per square, so always check the product's stated coverage. For a whole roof, multiply squares by three, add waste, and round up — you order in full bundles, never fractions, so rounding up prevents a short delivery mid-tear-off.
Twelve percent is a solid default for shingle bundles and is what this tool uses — a little higher than the roof-area waste because bundle rounding and cut-off at diagonals both eat material. Simple gable roofs can run 10%; cut-up roofs with many valleys and dormers push 15% or more. Document the roof's complexity in the file so the allowance is defensible when the estimate is reviewed.
Shingles are sold and delivered in whole bundles, and running short in the middle of a tear-off stops the job and risks a color-lot mismatch on the reorder. Rounding up guarantees full coverage plus your waste allowance on the roof. The small overage is normal roofing practice and is generally accepted in the estimate. This calculator always rounds the bundle count up for that reason.
