Common practice starts steep charges at 7/12, with a second band at 10/12 through 12/12 and an additional charge above 12/12. Below 7/12 is generally considered walkable and carries no add-on. The charge is quantified in squares for the slopes in each band — which is why per-slope pitch documentation matters: a roof that averages 6/12 can still have a 9/12 dormer face that earns its band. Confirm the exact break points against the carrier's guidelines.
When the work happens above single-story height — the customary markers are two or more stories, or eave heights around 20 feet and up even on a single tall story. The charge covers staging, material hoisting, and the slower movement tall work forces. It applies to the squares worked at height, which on most two-story homes is the whole roof. Photograph the elevation and note the eave height; a documented height charge survives review, an asserted one gets cut.
Most are written from aerial measurement reports, which deliver areas and pitches but don't force per-slope charge decisions — so the add-on lines simply never get created. Templates built on walkable single-story assumptions compound it.
