Product overview

Turn a percentage wind, hail, hurricane, or named-storm deductible into dollars — correctly. Enter the Coverage A dwelling limit, the percentage, and the loss, and you get the dollar deductible, what the insurer pays, and the insured's out-of-pocket, with an optional side-by-side against a flat deductible. Reach for it every time someone reads “2% deductible” as 2% of the damage: the percentage applies to the dwelling limit, and on a $400,000 home that's $8,000 whether the loss is $12,000 or $120,000.

Percentage deductibles are computed on the Coverage A dwelling limit, not on the loss amount — that one fact is most of the math. Dollar deductible = Coverage A × percentage; the insurer pays the loss less that amount, floored at zero, and the insured's out-of-pocket is the smaller of the loss or the deductible. A 2% deductible on $400,000 of Coverage A is $8,000, so a $15,000 hail loss nets $7,000. Which deductible applies — hurricane, named-storm, wind/hail, or the flat all-other-perils — depends on the policy's trigger language and state rules, and that determination changes the answer more than the arithmetic does.

Vendor insights

Mensuria writes a neutral scope built to survive review — every line item sourced to a photo, anything unprovable held back and flagged for you. It never files the estimate; a licensed adjuster confirms every line and stays the adjuster of record. Mensuria is independent and not affiliated with Verisk or Xactimate; “Xactimate-ready” means the worksheet is organized for Quick Entry.

Common questions

Neither, precisely — it's a percentage of the Coverage A dwelling limit on the declarations page. A 5% hurricane deductible on a home insured for $350,000 is $17,500 regardless of whether the storm did $20,000 or $200,000 of damage. That's the confusion this calculator exists to settle: people expect 5% of their damage and discover the deductible is fixed by their limit. Percentage deductibles are common in 19 states plus DC for wind, hail, hurricane, and named-storm perils.

Policy trigger language — typically tied to official declarations like a National Weather Service hurricane warning or a named storm, with a defined time window around it. Damage inside the trigger window takes the percentage deductible; wind damage outside it usually takes the flat all-other-perils deductible, which can differ by thousands of dollars. State rules constrain triggers in some coastal states. On a marginal date, the trigger determination is worth more scrutiny than any line item in the estimate.

Convert the percentage to dollars against Coverage A, then compare directly on the same loss. On a $400,000 home, a 1% deductible is $4,000 — richer than a $2,500 flat deductible for the insured on any loss above $2,500. This calculator's optional comparison field does the side-by-side and shows the payment difference. The comparison matters at renewal too, since moving from flat to percentage deductibles is a common quiet way premiums stay level while coverage thins.
