Convert between the area units estimates actually price in — square feet (SF), square yards (SY), and roofing squares (SQ, 100 SF) — and, when you add a depth, get cubic feet for volume-based line items. It's the quick conversion an adjuster needs when a takeoff came in SY and the line item prices in SF, or when a flooring quote is in squares and the estimate is in feet. Keep your units consistent so quantities key clean into Quick Entry and don't invite a supplement.
Everything routes through square feet. One SY equals 9 SF and one roofing square equals 100 SF, so the tool converts your input to SF using its factor, then divides by the target unit's factor to give the result — a straight ratio conversion, no rounding tricks. When you enter an optional depth in inches, volume is computed as area in SF times depth in feet (inches ÷ 12), returning cubic feet. Linear feet (LF) is a length, not an area, so it is not part of the area conversion; use it for perimeter and trim line items instead.

Common questions
One roofing square equals 100 square feet — it's the standard unit shingles and roofing materials are sold and estimated in. To go from SF to squares, divide by 100; a 2,400 SF roof surface is 24 squares before waste. This converter handles that both directions, so you can move a takeoff between SF and SQ without doing the math by hand, then add your waste factor separately.
Multiply square yards by 9 — one square yard is 9 square feet. Carpet is often quoted in SY while the Xactimate line item prices in SF, so a 40 SY room is 360 SF. Enter the value, set From to SY and To to SF, and the converter returns it. Keeping the estimate in the unit the line item prices in avoids a quantity mismatch when the numbers hit Quick Entry.
No — and that's on purpose. Linear feet measures length (baseboard, trim, gutter runs, perimeter), while SF, SY, and SQ measure area. There's no fixed factor to turn a length into an area without a second dimension. For LF work, use the room-measurement helper to get perimeter, or a dedicated linear-footage calculator. Mixing length and area units is a common source of quantity errors, so the tool keeps them separate.
Enter your area value and its unit, then fill in the optional depth in inches. The tool converts the area to square feet, multiplies by depth in feet (inches divided by 12), and returns cubic feet. That's what you want for volume line items — think fill material, insulation, or debris volume for disposal. Without a depth entered, the tool stays in area units and returns only the area conversion.
