Answer the question the drying plan skips: can the structure power the equipment? Enter the air movers, dehumidifiers, scrubbers, and heaters on the job — amp draws are prefilled with typical values you can override — and you get the total draw, how many 15 A and 20 A circuits the load needs, and the minimum generator when house power won't carry it. Reach for it at setup on any sizable water loss, before the third air mover on one receptacle trips a breaker and costs a night of drying.

Each equipment class draws its nameplate amps: roughly 2.5 A for an axial air mover, 6 A for an LGR dehumidifier, 2 A for an air scrubber, 12 A for a heater. Drying equipment runs continuously — more than three hours — so the NEC continuous-load convention loads each circuit to 80% of its rating: 12 usable amps on a 15 A circuit, 16 on a 20 A. The calculator totals draw per class, divides by usable amps to get circuits per class (units aren't split across circuits), and converts total watts to a minimum generator size at 120 V. Override the amp defaults with your equipment's actual specs; the math is only as good as the nameplates.

Common questions

At a typical 2.5 A per axial air mover, a 15 A circuit at the 80% continuous-load convention (12 usable amps) carries four; a 20 A circuit (16 usable) carries six. Centrifugal units draw more — check the nameplate. The practical failure isn't the arithmetic, it's that the receptacles in one room often share a single circuit with whatever else is on it, so distribute equipment across rooms and circuits and confirm nothing else heavy shares the line.

Total the amps and convert: amps × 120 V ÷ 1,000 = kW, then round up to the next common generator size. Ten air movers (25 A) plus two LGR dehumidifiers (12 A) is 37 A ≈ 4.4 kW — a 5 kW generator with little headroom, so 6.5 kW is the comfortable call. Startup surge on dehumidifier compressors argues for margin above the running load. This calculator does the conversion and suggests the minimum standard size.

The NEC treats loads that run three hours or more as continuous and sizes circuits so they carry no more than 80% of the breaker rating continuously — heat buildup in conductors and breakers is the concern. Drying equipment runs around the clock for days, the definition of continuous. Loading circuits to their full rating invites nuisance trips overnight, and every tripped breaker is drying time lost and a schedule extension to explain. Plan at 80% and the plan survives the night.
