Air movers follow the IICRC S500 rule of one unit per 50–70 SF of affected floor, so the tool returns a range (floor SF divided by 70 on the low end, by 50 on the high). Dehumidifier load uses the cubic-foot method: room volume (floor SF × ceiling height) divided by a class factor — 100 for Class 1, 40 for Class 2, 30 for Class 3 — yields required pints per day. Dividing that by your unit's rated capacity (default 110 PPD) gives the dehumidifier count. Higher classes carry more evaporation load, so they draw more grains and more equipment.

S500 guidance is one air mover for every 50 to 70 square feet of affected floor, plus one per pair of inside corners and offsets on the layout. This tool applies the 50–70 SF band to your floor area and returns a low-to-high range. Use the high end for Class 3 losses, wet carpet with pad, or rooms with heavy furnishings that block airflow; the low end is defensible for open Class 1 spaces. Always document the actual placed count in your photos so the equipment line matches what was on site.

The cubic-foot method sizes dehumidification off room volume rather than floor area. You take floor SF times ceiling height to get cubic feet, then divide by a class factor that reflects the evaporation load: 100 for Class 1, 40 for Class 2, and 30 for Class 3. The result is the pints-per-day the chamber needs to pull. Dividing by your dehumidifier's rated capacity — an LGR unit is often around 110 PPD at AHAM — tells you how many units to set. It is the standard first-pass sizing for a low-grain refrigerant or desiccant setup.

Yes — class drives the dehumidifier count, not the air-mover count. A Class 3 loss with water from overhead and high wicking evaporates far more moisture than a Class 1 loss into a low-porosity slab, so the class factor drops (100 to 40 to 30) and required pints per day climb. Air-mover count stays tied to floor area because it is about surface airflow. When you bump a room from Class 2 to Class 3 you should expect more dehumidification capacity on the estimate, and your class call should be backed by moisture-map documentation.

Low-grain refrigerant (LGR) units are the default for typical residential and light-commercial losses and are what the 110 PPD default reflects. Desiccant units earn their place on large-loss, bound-water materials like hardwood, plaster, and concrete, or cold environments where refrigerant efficiency falls off.
