The estimate starts at a three-day baseline and adds time for the factors that slow drying under IICRC S500. Category 2 adds a day and Category 3 adds two, reflecting the extra removal and cleaning contaminated losses require. Low-evaporation materials — plaster, hardwood, or concrete — add a day because bound water leaves slowly. Heavy severity adds a day for saturation. The result is clamped to a 2-to-7 day window so it stays realistic. It is a first-pass duration only; S500 requires equipment to remain until the material reaches its documented dry standard.

Bound-water materials like hardwood and plaster run longer; contaminated Category 3 losses run longer still because of the removal and cleaning involved. Drywall and other high-porosity materials release free water quickly under airflow. Hardwood, plaster, and concrete hold bound water — moisture locked inside a dense material that evaporates slowly — so they need more time and often specialty equipment like desiccant dehumidifiers or floor-drying mats. That is why S500 flags these as Class 4 specialty drying. This tool adds a day for those materials, but a badly saturated hardwood floor can take well beyond the seven-day cap; treat the number as a floor, not a promise, and let moisture readings drive the actual pull date.
Use it to estimate the equipment-days line, but bill the days you actually ran equipment and can document. Carriers scrutinize drying duration, and the defensible record is daily moisture logs showing the material trending toward its dry standard, plus placement photos. If drying stalls — because a chamber was opened, equipment was under-sized, or a material is holding bound water — document the reason. It affects the timeline mostly through the extra work a contaminated loss demands, not through physics. Category 1 clean water dries fastest. Category 2 grey water adds a day in this tool for the cleaning and partial removal involved. Category 3 black water adds two days because it typically means flood cuts, material disposal, antimicrobial application, and sanitization before drying even starts in earnest. So a Cat-3 job's overall mitigation window is longer even though the drying step itself follows the same evaporation rules once the affected material is removed.
