Gutter is estimated in linear feet along the eaves that carry it. Enter each side's eave run — leave off gable ends and any eave without gutter — and the calculator adds the four sides to a total LF. It then suggests downspouts at about one per 35 linear feet, rounded up, which is a common rule of thumb for residential drainage. A house with 40 + 40 + 30 + 30 = 140 LF of gutter works out to four downspouts. Actual downspout count depends on the roof area draining to each run and local code, so treat the suggestion as a starting point and verify on site.

A common rule of thumb is one downspout per 30 to 40 linear feet of gutter; this calculator uses roughly one per 35 LF and rounds up. The real driver is how much roof area drains to each gutter run — steep or large slopes shed more water and may need downspouts closer together — plus local code. Use the suggested count as a starting point and confirm placement against the roof's drainage on site.
Gutter runs along the eaves — the horizontal edges at the bottom of a slope — not the rakes or gable ends, which pitch up and don't collect runoff. So a simple gable house typically has gutter on two sides, while a hip roof carries it on all four. Enter only the eave runs that actually hold gutter; leaving out non-gutter edges keeps the linear-foot quantity accurate for the estimate.
