Product overview
Size a siding line item from wall dimensions without eyeballing the openings. Enter a wall's length and height, subtract the door and window area, add a waste allowance, and get net siding in square feet and squares. Reach for it when wind or hail has damaged a wall or elevation and you need a quantity that reflects what actually gets installed — gross wall area less openings, plus the waste that cut siding always consumes — ready to key into the estimate.
Gross wall area is length × height. From that the calculator subtracts the opening area you enter — doors and windows that don't receive siding — to get net area, floored at zero. It then adds your waste allowance, 10% by default, for cuts, laps, and corners, and divides by 100 to report squares alongside the SF, since siding is often ordered by the square. For a 40 ft × 9 ft wall with 60 SF of openings at 10% waste: (360 − 60) × 1.10 = 330 SF, or 3.3 squares. Measure each elevation separately and total the results for the full exterior.

Common questions
Yes — subtract the area of doors and windows, since siding isn't installed over openings. Enter the total opening area and this tool deducts it from the gross wall area before applying waste. On elevations with many or large openings the deduction is significant, so measuring them keeps the quantity honest. Some estimators leave small openings in to cover the extra cutting waste around them; if you do that, note it in the file so the quantity is defensible.
Ten percent is a common starting allowance for siding and is the default here, covering cuts, end laps, and corner trim. Long runs with few openings can come in lower, while walls broken up by many windows, gables, or offsets waste more and may justify 12–15%. Board-and-batten and lap patterns waste differently too. Document the elevation's complexity so the allowance holds up when the estimate is reviewed.
Measure each elevation separately — front, back, and both sides — then total the net areas. Elevations differ in height, gable area, and opening count, and wind or hail damage is often limited to specific sides. Per-elevation numbers let you scope only the damaged walls and keep each quantity tied to its photos. Run this calculator once per wall and add the results for the full exterior siding quantity.
